Welcome to Hacienda Chekul. We love sharing the wild beauty of our secluded beachfront villa in Sian Ka’an with travelers from all over the world. Many of our guests travel from California, so we get a lot of questions about the best way to fly from LAX to Tulum.
Planning your trip should be easy and relaxing. In this guide, we will show you exactly how to make the journey down to our tropical paradise. We will cover the best airport options, flight prices, and what to expect when you land.
Flying From Los Angeles to Tulum (The Basics)

When you plan your trip from LAX to Tulum, you have two main choices. You can fly into the new Tulum International Airport (TQO) or the Cancun International Airport (CUN).
Each airport has its own perks. The right choice depends on your budget and how you prefer to travel. Let us break down both options to help you decide.
Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto
Flying into the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport in Tulum is a wonderful experience. The airport is beautiful, modern, and surrounded by the green jungle. It is also much closer to the main town and our private villa.
Currently, there are no direct flights from Los Angeles to this new airport. You will need to make at least one stop along the way. The total flight time usually takes around 6 to 8 hours depending on your layover. Our guests tell us they love how calm and clean this new airport feels. It is a very peaceful way to start a vacation.

š” Local tip: The Tulum airport is known as the “airport in the jungle.” Because it is smaller, moving through customs and grabbing your bags is often much faster than at larger hubs.
Cancun International Airport
Many travelers from Los Angeles choose to fly into Cancun International Airport. This is because you can easily find direct flights from LAX to Cancun. The nonstop flight takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes.
Cancun is a larger and busier airport. It offers plenty of flight times to choose from every day. Once you land, the drive to Tulum takes about two hours. You can read more about this scenic drive in our guide on how to get from Cancun to Tulum.

When to Book and Flight Prices

Airfare from LAX changes throughout the year. Based on recent travel data, the cheapest months to fly are January and February. You can often find round trip flights starting around $289 during this time.
Prices usually go up in the late spring and summer. We suggest booking your flight four to six months in advance to get the best deal. If you are trying to save money, comparing prices between the Tulum and Cancun airports is a great idea.
