Welcome to Hacienda Chekul! We love sharing the wild beauty of our secluded beachfront villa in Sian Ka’an with travelers from all over the world. Our home is a peaceful escape surrounded by jungle and the turquoise Caribbean Sea.

When guests stay with us, they often ask about the best ancient sites to visit nearby. The Mayan ruins of Coba and Tulum are two of the most popular choices. Taking a day trip to explore Coba from Tulum is an adventure you will never forget.

In this guide, we will share everything you need to know about visiting the Coba ruins. We want to help you plan the perfect jungle excursion.

What Makes Coba So Special?

Coba is a massive ancient Mayan city hidden deep in the lush green jungle. The name Coba means “waters stirred by wind.” This is a perfect name because the city is built between two large lagoons.

Experts say Coba was a very powerful city. It was at its peak between the years 600 and 900 AD. Back then, it was home to over 50,000 people. Today, it feels like a lost world. You will hear tropical birds singing and monkeys howling in the trees as you walk around.

One of the most unique things about Coba is its network of “sacbes.” These are ancient white stone roads. The Maya built them to connect the different parts of the city. Walking or riding a bike down these ancient roads is truly magical.

💡 Local tip: Unlike many other ruins, Coba is heavily shaded by the jungle canopy. This makes it a great place to explore even on warmer days.

Coba vs. Tulum Ruins: Which Should You Visit?

Many guests ask us to compare Coba and the Tulum ruins. Both are amazing, but they offer very different experiences.

The Tulum ruins sit right on the edge of the ocean. The views of the blue water against the ancient stone temples are incredible. Because of this beautiful view, Tulum gets very busy. In 2025 alone, nearly one million people visited the Tulum ruins.

Coba offers a much quieter and more rugged experience. In 2025, Coba welcomed around 171,000 visitors. This means you will have a lot more space to explore in peace. Coba is also much larger than Tulum. It covers about 30 square miles. If you love nature, shade, and a sense of discovery, Coba is the perfect choice.

If you have the time, we highly recommend visiting both.

What to See and Do at Coba

There is so much to explore in this ancient jungle city. Here are our favorite things to do when we visit.

Rent a Bike or Tricycle
Because Coba is so large, the best way to see it is on wheels. Right near the entrance, you can rent a bicycle for the day. Riding a bike down the wide, flat jungle paths is so much fun. If you prefer to relax, you can hire a local guide to pedal you around in a tricycle taxi. They will even share interesting stories about the ruins along the way.

Visit the Nohoch Mul Pyramid
This is the main attraction at Coba. The Nohoch Mul pyramid is 137 feet tall. It is the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is an amazing structure to see in person. The sheer size of it rising out of the trees is breathtaking.

Explore the Coba Cenotes
After exploring the ruins, there is nothing better than a refreshing swim. There are three beautiful cenotes located just a short drive from the ruins. Cenotes are natural freshwater sinkholes. The water is cool, clear, and incredibly refreshing. You can learn more about these magical sinkholes in our guide on what a cenote is.

Helpful Tips for Your Visit

We want your trip to Coba to be easy and enjoyable. Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind.

  • Arrive early: The ruins open at 8:00 AM. Arriving right when they open helps you beat the heat and the crowds.
  • Bring cash: You will need Mexican pesos to pay for your entry ticket, parking, and bike rentals. Many small vendors do not take credit cards.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: You will be doing a lot of walking or biking. Sneakers or sturdy sandals are best.
  • Pack the essentials: Bring a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray. The jungle mosquitoes can be active.

💡 Did you know? Coba is only about a 45-minute drive inland from the town of Tulum. The drive is very easy and straight.
