When you close your eyes and picture a perfect vacation, you probably see white sand and bright blue water. That is exactly what you find on tulum beaches. The coast here is famous for a reason. The Caribbean Sea is warm, the palm trees are green, and the vibe is very relaxed.
At Hacienda Chekul, we have spent years living right next to these beautiful shores. We know that not all beaches here are the same. Some are full of energy and music. Others are quiet and full of nature.
Whether you want to snorkel with turtles or just read a book in silence, there is a spot for you. In this guide, we will share our favorite strips of sand. We will also share some local tips to help you enjoy the water.
The Popular North Beaches

If you look at a map of Tulum, the beaches to the north are usually the most famous. These are the spots you see on postcards. They are wide and beautiful. They are also where you will find the most people.
Tulum Archaeological Site (Playa Ruinas)
This is one of the most unique views in the world. Imagine swimming in the ocean while looking up at ancient Mayan temples. The beach here sits right below the famous castle of the Tulum Ruins.
You have to pay an entrance fee to get into the ruins to reach this beach. We think it is worth it. Our guests often tell us that seeing history and nature together is magical. It can get busy, so we suggest going very early in the morning.
💡 Insight: The Tulum ruins are the third most visited archaeological site in Mexico. Arriving right when they open at 8 AM helps you beat the heat and the crowds.

Playa Pescadores
Just south of the ruins, you will find Playa Pescadores. This translates to “Fishermen’s Beach.” It has a more local feel than some other spots. You will see small boats bobbing in the water.
This is a great place if you want to go on a boat tour. Many local guides can take you out to see the reef. It is also a wonderful spot to grab a fresh coconut and watch the waves. The sand here feels like soft powder.

The Peaceful South: Sian Ka’an
If you keep driving south past the busy hotel zone, the road turns into sand and gravel. The crowds disappear. The music fades away. This is where you enter the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
We believe this is the true gem of the region. Sian Ka’an means “Origin of the Sky” in Mayan. It is a protected area, so there are no big buildings or paved roads. It is just jungle, lagoon, and pristine beach.
Reserva de la Biósfera Sian Ka’an
The beaches here are wild and natural. You can walk for miles and not see another person. The water is crystal clear. Because it is a reserve, the nature is very healthy. You might see sea turtles, rays, or dolphins in the water.
Our guests love this area because it feels like a private island. It is the perfect place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. If you love privacy, this is the best place to be.

Tips for Enjoying Tulum Beaches
To have the best time, there are a few things you should know before you pack your bags.
Watch Out for Sargassum

You may have heard about seaweed, known as sargassum. It is a natural phenomenon that happens all over the Caribbean. It usually arrives between April and October.
If you visit during these months, the beaches might have seaweed on them. However, winter is usually very clear. If you want the best chance of perfect water, check out our guide on the best time to visit Tulum.
Respect the Nature
Tulum is home to many animals. Sea turtles often come to the shore to lay their eggs. If you see a marked nest, please give it space. We always encourage our guests to practice sustainability by picking up trash and using reef-safe sunscreen.
💡 Insight: The reef right off our coast is part of the Great Mayan Reef. It is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.
Explore Beyond the Sea
Sometimes it is nice to swim in fresh water. If the ocean is rough, you have other options. You can visit a cenote, which is a natural freshwater sinkhole.
Laguna de Kaan Luum
This lagoon is like a giant swimming pool made by nature. It is surrounded by jungle and is very peaceful. The center is a deep cenote, but the edges are shallow and safe for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the beaches in Tulum swimmable?
Yes, the beaches are great for swimming. The water is warm and usually calm. However, you should always check the flag warnings for currents.
Is there seaweed on Tulum beaches?
Sometimes. Seaweed, called sargassum, is most common from May to October. The amount changes daily. In the winter months, the beaches are typically much clearer.
Are Tulum beaches public?
In Mexico, all beaches are technically public. However, accessing them can be tricky in the hotel zone because you often have to pass through private property. Staying at a beachfront villa or visiting a public access point like Playa Pescadores is the easiest way to get to the water.
Is Sian Ka’an better than the Hotel Zone?
It depends on what you like. The Hotel Zone is busy with shops, music, and people. Sian Ka’an is quiet, private, and full of nature. If you want relaxation and wildlife, Sian Ka’an is the better choice.
