Tulum is famous for its soft white sand and clear blue water. It is the kind of place you dream about when you are sitting at your desk. But if you are planning a trip, you might have heard about the seaweed. It is also known as sargassum.

At Hacienda Chekul, we want our guests to have the best vacation possible. We know that the ocean conditions matter to you. You want to know when the water is clear and when the seaweed might arrive.

In this guide, we will answer your most important questions about the seaweed season in Tulum. We will explain when it happens, why it happens, and how we handle it at our private villa in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

The Short Answer: When to Expect Seaweed

The ocean is nature, so it can be unpredictable. However, we see patterns every year.

The Sargassum Season usually runs from May to October. These are the warmer months. During this time, the ocean currents change. They bring floating seaweed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean coast.

The Clear Season is typically from November to April. The water is usually cooler and clearer during these months. This is why winter and early spring are very popular times to visit.

💡 Insight: In recent years, including 2026, we have seen seaweed arrive a bit earlier. Sometimes it starts showing up in March or April. It is always good to check before you fly.

What Exactly Is Sargassum?

Sargassum is a type of brown algae. It floats on top of the ocean. It is actually very good for the planet. It provides a home for baby sea turtles, crabs, and fish while it is out in the deep ocean.

The problem happens when it comes to the shore. When it lands on the beach in big piles, it starts to dry out. This can make the water look brown instead of blue. It can also have a strong smell.

At Hacienda Chekul, we respect nature. But we also know you want a clean beach. That is why we work hard to keep our beachfront beautiful for you.

How We Handle Seaweed at Hacienda Chekul

We are located in a very special place. Our villa is inside the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. This area is wild and protected. Because we are a private villa, we manage the seaweed differently than a big public beach.

Here is how we help ensure you have a great stay:

  • Daily Cleaning: Our dedicated staff cleans our private stretch of beach every morning. We do our best to remove the seaweed so you can enjoy the sand.
  • Private Pool: Sometimes nature wins, and the ocean is not perfect for swimming. That is why we have a beautiful private pool. You can cool off and relax with a drink in your hand, surrounded by the jungle.
  • The Lagoon Advantage: Our property is unique. We have the ocean on one side and the calm Campeche Lagoon on the other. The lagoon never has sargassum. It is always clear, calm, and perfect for sunset boat rides.

Best Things to Do If There Is Seaweed

If you arrive and the seaweed is heavy, do not worry. Your vacation is not ruined. Tulum and Sian Ka’an have amazing waters that are not connected to the ocean beaches.

Here are our favorite seaweed-free activities:

1. Swim in a Cenote

Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with fresh water. They are underground or in the jungle. They are not connected to the ocean surface, so they are always free of seaweed. The water is cool and crystal clear. You can see fish and rock formations underwater.

Read our guide on What is a Cenote to learn more.

2. Explore the Sian Ka’an Lagoon

Since we are located right in the reserve, you must explore the lagoon side. You can take a boat tour through ancient Mayan canals. The water here is fresh and clear. You can float in the gentle current. It is one of the most relaxing experiences in the world.

3. Visit Yalku Lagoon

This is a beautiful spot near Akumal. It is where fresh water meets salt water. It is protected from the big ocean waves. This means it usually has much less seaweed than the open beaches. It is excellent for snorkeling.

YAL-KU CENOTE Y Laguna Yalku

This is a fantastic place for families and snorkelers. The water is a mix of fresh and salt water, which attracts many colorful fish. It is calm and protected, making it a great alternative if the beaches are wavy or have seaweed. Our guests often tell us they love how peaceful it feels compared to busy public beaches.

4. Visit the Ruins

Tulum is about more than just the beach. The history here is incredible. You can visit the ruins at Coba or Muyil. The Muyil ruins are very close to us in Sian Ka’an. They are in the deep jungle and are very quiet.

Zona Arqueológica de Muyil

This archaeological site is a hidden gem. It is less crowded than the main Tulum ruins. You can walk through the jungle to see ancient temples. There is also a boardwalk that leads you right to the lagoon. It is a perfect day trip for nature lovers staying with us.

5. Take a Day Trip to Cozumel

Islands like Cozumel often have less seaweed on their west coast. The island blocks the seaweed from hitting the beaches on that side. You can take a ferry for a day trip to enjoy clear water snorkeling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What months are the worst for seaweed in Tulum?
The summer months are usually the time when seaweed is most common. This includes June, July, and August. However, nature varies, and some years are different than others.

Can you swim in the water when there is sargassum?
If there is only a little bit, you can swim. But if the seaweed is thick and brown, it is better not to swim. It can tangle around you and sometimes contains small sea creatures that might itch. We recommend using our pool or visiting a cenote instead.

Is there seaweed in Sian Ka’an?
Yes, the ocean beaches in Sian Ka’an can get seaweed just like Tulum. However, the lagoon side of Sian Ka’an is always free of seaweed. This is a major benefit of staying in this area.

What is the best month to avoid seaweed?
The winter months are the safest bet. December, January, February, and March typically have the clearest water.

Does Hacienda Chekul clean the beach?
Yes. Our staff works hard to clean the beach in front of our villa daily. We want you to enjoy the sand as much as possible.
